Planned Giving at the Jesus Center

In 2020, the Katy Thoma Legacy Society was formed to encourage and account for those who have committed to supporting this mission in their lifetime, and who desire to support it into the future.

The Jesus Center has served alongside the churches and citizens of the City of Chico for more than 40 years ensuring that the neediest among us are cared for in the name of Jesus because God loves His people and wants them to live their best life.

In 2020, The Katy Thoma Legacy Society was formed to encourage and account for those who have committed to supporting this mission in their lifetime and desire to support it into the future. They have named the Jesus Center in their estate documents because they trust the Jesus Center to be there to adapt, respond, and love those who are routinely forgotten in our community.

Joining the Jesus Center’s Giving Society is simple.

If you are someone who has invested in the work of the Jesus Center in your lifetime, you can join the Katy Thoma Legacy Society. If you want to share out of your abundance beyond your lifetime, we invite you to name the Jesus Center in your estate documents. If you want to ensure that there is a Christ-centered outreach to the poor into the future, it is time to consider leaving a gift in your estate.

We invite you to consult your financial advisors as you consider making a legacy gift to the Jesus Center.

Ensuring the love of Jesus for the poor into the future.

Ms. Katy Thoma joined the Jesus Center team in 1993 as Executive Director. At the time, the Jesus Center provided 45,000 meals annually. It is not an overstatement to say that during Katy’s tenure, the very existence of the Jesus Center was threatened. From January of ‘96 to June of ‘97 there were five arson fires on Jesus Center buildings.

Katy also oversaw the purchase and move to 1297 Park Avenue in 1998. Despite these threats and challenges, that marked Katy as a truly sacrificial leader, she had the foresight, and spiritual insight to increase the Center’s services adding a shelter, named Sabbath House in 2001. Which has been a place of respite 365 days a year for over 20 women and children each night since that time.

Katy’s lasting contributions are varied. Over $1 million in gifts matured over the last 15 years, making her the perfect founder of our legacy society.

Typical vehicles to use for planned gifts include:

  • OUTRIGHT BEQUEST — To make an outright bequest to the Jesus Center, you designate in your will a specific asset or amount or percentage of money you wish to bequeath. You may wish to use the following language when making your outright bequest: “I give and bequeath [describe property] to Jesus Provides Our Daily Bread, for its general purposes [or other purposes].”

CONTINGENT BEQUEST — To make a contingent bequest to the Jesus Center, you designate in your will conditions under which a portion of your estate will come to Jesus Provides Our Daily Bread. You may wish to use the following language when making your contingent bequest: “If any or all of my heirs named herein under have predeceased me, I give and bequeath the portion of my estate reserved for that person or persons to Jesus Provides Our Daily Bread for its general purposes [or other purposes].”

  • This type of trust pays you and/or another beneficiary income for life, provides a substantial charitable income tax deduction, and can serve as a highly effective means of avoiding capital gains and estate taxes. You can choose either a fixed income or a set percentage of the value of the trust, determined annually.

  • This type of trust gives the Jesus Center income for a set number of years but retains the principal for you or your heirs. A lead trust is especially beneficial to your heirs if you have a large estate and are concerned about federal gift and estate taxes. Removed from your estate, assets placed in a lead trust can be passed to loved ones untouched by the diminishing effects of these taxes.

  • Gifts of real estate can include homes, condominiums, apartments, undeveloped land, farmland, and rental property. A gift of this kind can alleviate capital gains taxes, income taxes, and broker’s fees as well as management costs and responsibilities, while the Jesus Center can receive income or generate capital from your gift.

  • A combined estate and income tax can deplete your retirement account by as much as two-thirds. By naming the Jesus Center the beneficiary of your retirement plan, the remainder of your plan is not taxed and your heirs have no “hidden” income tax liability. Another option is to have your retirement assets transferred to a charitable remainder trust, providing valuable income to an heir for life.

  • You may either contribute the face value of the policy to the Jesus Center (Jesus Provides Our Daily Bread) as the beneficiary of the policy. An outright gift of your insurance policy will allow you to receive a charitable income tax deduction, while naming the Jesus Center as your beneficiary helps you avoid federal gift and estate taxes.
